The recent climate change conference sparked many debates on agriculture being a big part of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s because cows, for example, release methane and nitrous oxide into the air when they digest their food. The bigger the cow, the more the gas it releases.
Solution: Smaller breeds like our small yellow cattle do not release as much due to sheer size which is smaller than commercial breeds. Buy grass-fed whenever you can.
There are now studies being made to capture the methane rather than releasing it into the air. But while we are waiting for such developments, look to smaller native cows for your meat cravings.
FEEDING THE COWS
If cows just ate grass as Nature intended them to be, they produce less gas. But with feeds and commercial fattening preparations introduced into their diet, the body simply gives off more gas as the stomachs of the cow (it has several rumens) get into full digestion and ergo, more gas released into the air.
In the SLOW FOOD movement, old varieties or species of meat sources are preserved so we can simply go back to what Nature intended.
People will want to feed the world and give cattle raising as a solution. And chickens and eggs.. After all, meat, milk and eggs are proteins that are needed by everyone. I read somewhere that a 100 g sardine can is equivalent to the protein of 17 bananas. Of course it’s easier to get protein from fish and much easier from meats. But look what it’s done. Milk and eggs are also the cheaper sources of much-needed protein. You get milk from cows and eggs from the chickens. So how do we go with the “less meat” suggestion?
Solution: Look to other sources of protein like legumes and beans. Alternate your protein sources and eat less meat and chicken.
EVEN FISH IS ENDANGERED?
Sadly , yes. The increase in greenhouse gases cause the Earth to heat up affecting the sea, melting glaciers and then also increasing the temperature of the oceans. This makes many fish unable to live in warmer waters…so there are species of fish which start to die or become extinct. Are fish farms the solution? That’s like eating fish from a factory. Natural is always better when it comes to seafood. We think of the food chain down below and try to eat as big a fish as possible to make way for the small ones to still grow to size.
READ UP AND SMART UP
Still many unenlightened folks simply do not care. Just like the use of less plastic and reusing paper , glass and cartons. What’s the deal? Plastic releases harmful chemicals in the manufacture and then again in its “recycling” effort. Paper simply needs more trees to be cut down. So less paper and no plastic is the ideal. Can we do it?
If we have been able to remove styro, and we are able to use less plastic from our lives the past eight years (at least that was when our campaigns started), we can surely also change the way we eat.
But to be convinced we must know WHY we are doing it. It is not simply fashionable. It is the imperative. Who does not want a cooler Earth? Who does not want a cooler ocean? We want it to be just the way we found it 50 years ago or more.
So, do yourself a favor and think what you can do. Why Slow Food? It has already “curated” the food you should be eating to help save the world from going away. IT already shows you what eating more of natural stuff and less of processed is a good thing. It already shows us that good, clean and fair food will be available if there are more people who ask for it, who demand it.
